“Island of Dreams” Embarks on Its International Festival Journey
After completing its post-production stage, Island of Dreams (Isla de Sueños), the first feature-length documentary from Piranga Films, is preparing to begin its route through film festivals around the world.
Directed by Alvaro Jiménez and Cliff Orloff, the film is a co-production between Piranga Films (Colombia) and Red Door Video Productions (United States), with the work of Imán Music in sound post-production and Feels Color Company in color grading.
Filmed between 2024 and 2025 in various regions of Cuba, Island of Dreams portrays the lives of several Cubans who, despite deeply loving their island, face the difficult decision of staying or leaving in search of a better future. It is a journey accompanied by lively Cuban music, the chaotic noise of Havana, the calm of the city of Santa Clara, and many other places that reflect an intimate and sensitive view of an island constantly balancing between staying and leaving.
The film is set against Cuba’s post-COVID migration crisis, considered the most severe in at least 80 years, showing how those who remain on the island face daily challenges while striving to maintain their lives, identity, and hope.
With a deeply musical approach and a poetic gaze, Island of Dreams turns the choice to stay on the island into a universal metaphor for resilience, belonging, and the human capacity to keep dreaming even when everything seems to fade away.
Its journey through festivals also represents a new voyage for the film itself: a symbolic migration that carries the voices and faces of Cuba to other continents. In each screening, Island of Dreams invites audiences to see the act of staying not as resignation, but as a profound form of hope.
