“Mesones”: Nominated for the most important Colombian Design Award
The immersive web and virtual reality documentary Mesones: A Community Reborn has been nominated for the prestigious Lapiz de Acero Award in the Digital | Website category. This innovative experience is the result of a co-production between The HALO Trust, La Cuarta Pared, AMAN, Show N’ Tell, and Piranga Films.
The Lapiz de Acero Award is the highest recognition of design in Colombia. This interdisciplinary event celebrates creativity in its various forms and highlights its impact on building a better future. Being nominated underscores the innovation and significance of the project in the digital and narrative fields.
This project brings to life a 10-episode documentary series, complemented by a short film version, a photographic essay, and a virtual tour covering more than 16 kilometers of jungle and mountains.
For The HALO Trust, this initiative marks a milestone, as it takes place in the area where the organization has removed the highest number of landmines in Colombia. To share this story beyond traditional reports, we created a web-based virtual reality documentary—an immersive experience that integrates audiovisual documentary content, a photographic essay, infographics, texts, informational capsules, soundscapes, and official documents along the journey. From a documentary perspective, the project highlights the impact of Humanitarian Demining, with the territory as the central axis of the story.
This space, once a scene of conflict and displacement, now reflects its transformation. Colombia remains one of the countries with the highest number of landmine victims, and this initiative seeks to raise awareness of that reality. Through technology, we redefine the way demining efforts are presented, showcasing their potential as a key tool for awareness and social change. The experience not only makes this issue accessible to a global audience but also facilitates education and consciousness-raising efforts while providing donor governments with a detailed view of the terrain and its challenges.
The project’s design enables the story to be told from multiple perspectives, overcoming interpretation barriers and fostering emotional connections with a diverse audience. Its innovative approach integrates various narrative formats, allowing users to explore and engage with the content freely, ensuring a unique and meaningful experience. In doing so, it establishes a before-and-after in the communication of Humanitarian Demining in Colombia.
For Piranga Films, being part of this project represents both pride and a commitment to making visible the communities affected by the Colombian conflict. Mesones: A Community Reborn is a testament to the power of technology and documentary storytelling to drive social impact and promote change.
